HWW Looks at the Bigger Picture of Species at Risk

Throughout its 45-year history, Hinterland Who’s Who has given Canadians a detailed look at Canadian wildlife including several species at risk, such as the leatherback seaturtle, the peregrine falcon and most recently, the Atlantic whitefish. Now, our latest species at risk video vignettes and fact sheet takes a look at the bigger issues behind all species at risk, particularly the health of their habitats, and what you can do to help reverse and avoid species declines.

The future of these plants and animals depends on how well we protect and revitalize habitat, essential to healthy wildlife and ultimately, a healthy environment for us all.

Canadians across the country are working together to recover many species at risk including those publicized by HWW.

HWW’s latest contribution to this effort has been to highlight the plight of the Atlantic whitefish, a glittering little salmonid species land-locked in a single watershed in Nova Scotia. Only a few hundred strong in the wild, it’s one of the most endangered species in Canada. But we have a special fondness for the Atlantic whitefish, because not only is it HWW’s first fish, it was also the first video vignette shot in high-definition in the animal's native habitat.

Other species at risk we’ve profiled include the peregrine falcon, the subject of one of our now-vintage original video vignettes in the early 60s. Since our relaunch in 2003, we’ve also raised awareness of the monarch butterfly, a species at risk partly because of loss of nectar sources along its migration routes, and the burrowing owl’s struggle against the loss of its native grassland habitat and underground nesting sites.

Governments and scientists are doing their part, but helping species at risk is everybody’s responsibility. There are a lot of things that you, too, can do to lend a helping hand. Start by checking out HWW’s latest online fact sheet on species at risk and watch the video vignettes — the 30-second classic and 60-second youth versions. And also have a look at our vintage vignette Endangered Species, and the individual species at risk profiled on this website. We’ll show you how you can make a difference to ensure a future for Canadian species at risk.
