Hinterland Who’s Who Launches Boreal Forest PSA

OTTAWA, June 27, 2006 — The newest addition to the Hinterland Who’s Who (HWW) series was recently released by, the Canadian Wildlife Federation (CWF), the Forest Products Association of Canada (FPAC) and Environment Canada.  This installment of the popular vignette series speaks to the importance of the boreal forest.

“The boreal forest is Canada’s largest eco-region, occupying 35 per cent of the total Canadian land area and 77 per cent of Canada's total forest land. Through extensive education and information programs, the CWF is proud to advocate for Canada’s wild spaces and species that call the boreal forest home,” said Colin Maxwell, CWF Executive Vice President.

“Canada’s forest products industry is extremely proud to support the Hinterland Who’s Who boreal habitat initiative. While Canada shares stewardship of the boreal forest with other boreal nations including Russia, Scandinavia, and the United States, it is a vital part of Canada’s environmental, economic and social landscape,” said Avrim Lazar, President and CEO of the FPAC.

This HWW educational vignette points out the need to balance the needs of people with the needs of wildlife in this ecosystem. In addition, the HWW website www.hww.ca offers a wealth of boreal-based information about how best to maintain that balance. A downloadable boreal forest education kit supplied by the Canadian Forestry Association www.canadianforestry.com is also available. The information details the many species found within the boreal; the contributing benefits of the boreal to Canada’s overall well-being, including climate control and economic impacts; and the actions Canadians and industries can take to sustain the boreal forest for generations to come.

Hinterland Who’s Who is a joint program of the Canadian Wildlife Federation and Environment Canada’s Canadian Wildlife Service. Hinterland Who’s Who has been bringing Canadians closer to our wilderness heritage for more than 45 years.
