Featured Species - Peary Caribou

There are more than 2.4 million caribou in Canada, which include four subspecies. One of these species is the Peary caribou, a small, light-coloured caribou found only in the islands of the Canadian arctic archipelago, where they number about 10,000.

In 2004, the Peary caribou has been assessed as endangered by COSEWIC. Consultations are underway to determine if Peary caribou should be listed under SARA. Numbers have declined by about 72 percent in the last 60 years, mostly because of severe icing episodes due to changing weather conditions, where ice has covered vegetation and led to caribou starvation.
