To many Canadians, the whining hum of a mosquito is a common — if irritating — sound of summer. Yet not all of these insects are out for blood. Humans have come to think of the mosquito as a blood-thirsty pest, but their primary source of nourishment is sugar, especially males which cannot bite.

What you can do to help urban wildlife:

* Welcome animals that help control insects and rodents naturally.

* Seal your garbage carefully to avoid attracting unwanted visitors.

* Look for holes in your house where wildlife can get in.
