Feature Species: Burrowing Owl

The burrowing owl is smaller than a pigeon, can mimic the hiss of a rattlesnake and hunts as much during the day as it does at night. At one time, this tiny bird of prey was common in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Now, it is one of the most endangered birds in western Canada.

Learn more about the burrowing owl by reading its fact sheet, or watching a video. Also, check out its fact file in The Canadian Wildlife Federation’s Canadian Wildlife magazine.
