What's New

Message from Peter Kent

On behalf of the Government of Canada, I take great pleasure in congratulating Hinterland Who’s Who on 50 years of excellence in wildlife education programming.

In 1963, when the Canadian Wildlife Service first began broadcasting Hinterland Who’s Who vignettes on television, Canadians watched appealing short films on native birds and animals. Today, Hinterland Who’s Who still connects Canadians with their natural environment by reaching a new generation through modern technologies and social media.

I hope all Canadians will join me in this 50th anniversary celebration, and that they will continue to discover our country’s wildlife and learn more about the protection and conservation of nature in years to come.

Sincerely,

The Honourable Peter Kent, P.C., M. P.
Minister of the Environment

Message from Wade Luzny

In 1963, 50 years ago, a Canadian institution appeared - the Hinterland Who’s Who vignettes began airing on the then new medium of black and white television.

I can remember as a young boy watching my favourite TV shows like Forest Rangers. The moment the commercial break came and I heard the haunting first strains of the flute music, I was glued to the set to learn about another wild creature. I couldn’t wait to head outdoors and try to see wildlife for myself. With my new found knowledge, I could have my very own Forest Rangers adventure whether I was searching my neighbourhood for wild creatures or going on a family visit to a national park.

As it did for me all those years ago, Hinterland Who’s Who is still bringing wildlife directly into people’s homes. In 2003, the Canadian Wildlife Federation started working in partnership with Environment Canada on this beloved programme. At CWF, we are proud to be associated with this iconic brand which has been present for almost as long as our organization itself, and to work towards making wildlife relevant for the generations to come.

Further, Hinterland Who’s Who has been reaching Canadians in new ways, including demonstrations with animals. I can personally attest to the impact of these public displays. At all events we attend, like, for example, the Vancouver Olympics and Toronto International Film Festival, we are definitely traffic-stoppers!

Hinterland Who’s Who has inspired thousands of Canadians to connect with wildlife in so many different ways over five decades. It has undoubtedly played, and continues playing, a significant role in ensuring that our wild species remain part of the Canadian experience. With your participation, the Hinterland Who’s Who anniversary is certain to be a great success!

Sincerely,

Wade Luzny, CEO, Executive Vice-President
